Minerals for Prostate Health: Zinc, Selenium, Iodine
Three minerals dominate prostate-health conversations: zinc, because the prostate hoards it; selenium, because a famous trial shocked everyone; and iodine, because prostate tissue accumulates it and supplement brands have noticed. The evidence for each tells a different story.
Zinc: the prostate's signature mineral
The healthy prostate concentrates zinc to levels nearly unique in the body, and prostate tissue zinc drops in disease states — a biological fact that spawned decades of "zinc for prostate" reasoning. The catch: high tissue zinc is a marker of healthy prostate metabolism, and no trial establishes that supplemental zinc restores or protects it. Zinc remains essential nutrition — men need it for immunity and general function — but the prostate-zinc story is biology awaiting proof, not a supplement prescription.
Selenium: the cautionary tale
Selenium's prostate story is the field's great natural experiment. Observational links looked promising; the massive SELECT trial then found no protective benefit from selenium (or vitamin E) supplementation, with additional analyses raising concern about the supplements in certain subgroups. It stands as the textbook case of observational promise collapsing under trial evidence — and the reason careful publications treat "minerals for prostate" claims with suspicion.
Iodine: proven biology, open prostate question
Iodine's thyroid role is ironclad and its prostate-accumulating biology is real, but the supplemental-iodine-for-prostate-benefit chain remains hypothetical — covered fully in our iodine deep-dive, including the thyroid cautions that come along for the ride.
The mineral lesson
Biology is full of tissues that concentrate specific minerals without supplementation reliably changing their fate. Minerals matter most at the sufficiency level — a diet that avoids deficiency — and the prostate mineral literature, zinc and iodine included, mostly argues for good nutrition rather than for bottles.
Minerals FAQ
Should men take zinc for the prostate?
Take zinc if you need it for general sufficiency; take it for proven prostate benefit and you are ahead of the evidence.
What about selenium supplements?
Post-SELECT, routine selenium supplementation for prostate reasons has little to recommend it and some to caution against.
